Pelicans
Brown pelicans can be found in Everglades National Park year round, while the Whites are true snow birds. They arrive in the fall and depart as soon as it starts warming again up North.
The Brown pelican teetered on extinction in the 1970's and remains a threatened species but is making strides towards recovery. Its a wonder any survive their daredevil method of fishing - plunging head first into water at break-neck speeds to scoop up bait fish which are swimming near the surface.
White Pelicans, while considered common, are a must-see in Everglades National Park if for no other reason than their sheer numbers. Beyone that, these birds are huge with wing-spans that can exceed 100 inches and to see a large colony of them is truly awe-inspiring.
