Everglades Birding Tour: Moorehens and Grebes

Pied-billed Grebes are small divers - feeding mainly on small fish, frogs, tadpoles, and other aquatic invertebrates. They are amazingly fast divers - often tough to photograph because they are always diving!

They are often found in freshwater ponds - in lily pads and other cover where bait congregates. Other birds that might be found in similar areas area Moorehens, Ibis and egrets.

The Moorehen, seen here with a glossy Ibis, is a medium sized member of the Rail family - they walk very well on strong legs, and have long toes that are well adapted to walking on uneven surfaces - even the tops of lily pads. They are omnivores - eating plant material, frogs, tadpoles, sirens, minnows - just about anything it finds. They are often found in groups on shallow vegetated lakes.
