Everglades National Park Birding Tour: Great Horned Owl
This isn't the best picture of a great horned owl but it is not of one in captivity, rather we spent a long time getting near enough to get this shot after hearing his call and tracking him down. He would only let us get so close and then would fly just out of range again....and off we'd go on another hunt.
The Great Horned Owl is found primarily in the pinelands and cypress rather than the saltier mangrove areas of the Park. They are voracious predators - with an apparent complete distain of carrion. They feed on virtually anything they can catch - small rodents, fish, reptiles, and amphibians.
