Everglades National Park Birding Tour: Caracara
While not typical, I have seen Caracara in Everglades National Park.
The Caracara is a member of the falcon family - however often is casually called an eagle or hawk. It is the most terrestrial of all falcons - spends a lot of time on the ground. Their range is predominantly in South and Central American but have seemingly become more frequent in South Florida now as well. They are easily recognizable as they are large and have a VERY distinct orange and white beak and orange legs.
They often feed on carrion, but will take advantage of any opportunity by eating amphibians, reptiles, turtles, fish, crab and insects. I've seen them eating a small alligator as pictured here. To return to the Bird List click here.
